MEMOIRS TO MEMORIES
New York City. The
University of the Philippines Alumni Association NY Chapter announces its
successful production of yet another collection of life stories turned into a
coffee table book as a fundraiser for scholarship in the Philippines. For the UP Centennial Celebration, Dr.
Carmencita C. Quesada Fulgado was appointed Commissioner Abroad. She edited and
published the Memoirs of UP Alumni Abroad. This brought $50,000 to the University
Scholarship Fund. Now, with her as current president, UPAA-NY sponsored its
sequel, Memories…A Legacy Gift. This
time, contributors are Filipinos, and non-Filipinos, UP and non-UP alumni…for “everyone has a
story to tell, an experience to share, and gratitude to express” Dr. Fulgado explains. Just like the Memoirs
book, each page is a donation. The net proceeds after the cost of publication
has been deducted, will be added to the Scholarship Fund, now aimed at
providing eligible needy students from the 7 independent units of the University,
from Baguio to Mindanao. Dr. Fulgado adds that “no longer do students need to be in Diliman
or Manila, they could be attending UP Iloilo , or UP Mindanao, UP Baguio, UP
Los Banos, or UP Open University. To date, since Dr. Fulgado signed her first
deed of donation with UP Foundation, in 2000 the endowment fund created by her
“shepherding the flock from abroad” has reached $97,000 and helped 19 students finish college. Dr.
Fulgado is leaving for the Philippines and on December 5th will be signing
an additional $50,000 Deed of Donation, the initial net proceeds from the sequel Memories..a Legacy Gift. .She is also officially visit 4 campuses, meet with the Chancellors
and fellow alumni to inspire them to do the same by relating her fundraising story….Mobilizing UP Alumni and Friends to Give Back.
