UPAA-NY’s Book III Memories of UP Alumni and Friends United
is ready for printing in January 2019. The 3rd and last of
coffee table books of Memories, the first of which was for the UP Centennial
Celebration in 2008: Memoirs of UP Alumni Abroad. The
success of the first book led into Book II published in 2012: Memories…A
Legacy Gift of Filipinos and Friends which welcomed non-UP and
non-Filipinos to contribute their stories, express their gratitude and share
their experiences. Both successful in
the production as well as raising funds, each brought $50,000 to the Endowment
Scholarship Fund, started in 2000, continued through 2006-2008. In 2012 all
Deeds of Donations signed by Dr. Carmencita Quesada Fulgado with Presidents
Nemenzo, Roman and Pascual were combined and renamed: UP Alumni, Quesada-Fulgado, and Friends Scholarship Fund. The UP
Foundation Inc. holds and manages the fund, with interest only being used for
disbursement to scholars through the Office of Student Scholarship and
Services. The Scholarship Fund, since
2003 to the present has had 39 recipients, 27 have graduated, one magna cum laude,
twenty-five cum laude. The fund can now have eight scholarship
slots, Book III aims to increase this number.
UPAA-NY, following the basic purpose of alumni
associations: Give Back to Alma Mater in
gratitude for what it has given us made this their signature project. As stated by then Chancellor Cao addressing the
UPAA-NY in 2006, “ While it’s in giving that we receive, we who have already
received UP branding, what have we given in return?” Scholarship is always
wanting, as there is always the qualified needy students having difficulty
especially in their Junior and Senior years, the lure of quitting to begin
earning, help their family who could be urging them to do so. This scholarship fund has become the way to
finish their course, and receive the coveted UP diploma. And this is how it all
started.
Dr. Fulgado’s brainchild was “born”
during her two-term UPAAA Presidency (1995-1999) when she signed with Pres. Nemenzo the first $10,000 Deed of
Donation (DOD) in 2000, was augmented when UPAA-NY duplicated this with their
own $10,000 Adopt-a-Scholar project,
then unto another $20,000 with UPAAA President Fel Tabangay both DOD signing in
2006
held in New
York City. All funds have been
effectively managed by the UP Foundation Inc. But the greatest impetus was yet
to come when Dr. Fulgado, who kept her promise to Pres. Nemenzo to revive the
New York alumni chapter was appointed by President Roman, as one of the Commissioners
Abroad for the Centennial Celebration representing UPAA-NY. The Commission, headed by former UP President
, Senator Edgardo Angara, Chairman of the Commission, along with the members,
approved her proposal for a lasting coffee table book of memoirs by alumni
abroad. The project faced skepticism,
nonetheless there were more believers who were relentless and in less than two
years, on time for the 2008 celebration, the publication was released, The DOD
signed with Pres. Roman more than
doubled the fund that was already in the Scholarship fund. Meanwhile, in a
limited capacity, awards were already being given to eligible students.
Pres. Roman asked at the Reception if
she would do it again. “ I would accept
another challenge, but this time it will be open to all who wish to contribute
to the Scholarship Fund and their story, their Legacy, to be published in another
coffee table book, and in so doing support UP scholars”. Book
II:
Memories…a Legacy Gift was
brought to fruition in 2012.
FOR UPAA-NY’s Memories: The Attitude
is GRATITUDE
Another DOD signing of $50,000 with the newly minted UP
Pres. Pascual in June of that year happened. With all the funds combined and
renamed UP Alumni Quesada-Fulgado and Friends Scholarship Fund, Dr. Fulgado this time visited four of the Constituent
Units: UPM, UPLB, UPOU, UPD. Earlier in 2007, she was guest of UPV. Convinced that alumni “at home” in their
various Units were supportive of this Giving Back Project, she proposed the
idea of a 3rd book. Pres.
Pascual readily accepted to be Honorary Chair.
Book III : Memories
of UP Alumni and Friends United is now
ready for publication in January 2019. Delayed by unfortunate, unanticipated
circumstances including natural disaster (Haiyan) UPAA-NY decided to give a
$10,000 pre-publication donation, delivered personally in Diliman by Dr.
Fulgado in June 2016. The delay had a blessing, the peso contribution submitted
directly to UPFI nearly matched the $10,000 pre-publication donation, with the
support of four of the eight Constituent Units of the UP System, led by UPM.
