" MEMOIRS" GIVES BIRTH TO "MEMORIES"

New York City. Feb 2 2008.  Dr. Carmencita C. Quesada Fulgado, "Menchee" to her friends, has always had an eye in fundraising for endowed scholarships.  Personally,  on her 25th wedding anniversary, she suggested to her guests, in lieu of a gift, to make a tax-deductible contribution to St. John's University where she was working.  This created the Quesada-Fulgado Anniversary Scholarship for students of Philippine heritage.  During her presidency in the National UPAAA (UP Alumni Association in America) 1995-1999 she raised it's first Scholarship Fund ($10,000), signed the deed of donation in 2000.  In 2006, as prelude to the Centennial, the UPAAA Scholarship II ($20,000) was signed in New York atthe reception held for Chancellor Cao in April, and the UPAA-NY Adopt-a-Scholar Scholarship ($10,000) at the reception held for President Roman in June.  Both were earmarked as part of the Centennial Celebration initiatives of both alumni chapters.
It is not surprising that when Dr. Fulgado was appointed UP Centennial Commissioner Abroad, she took at heart her advisory role and invited fellow alumni abroad in making contributions toward the publication of Memoirs of UP Alumni Abroad.  With their contribution, donors were given a page or more to write their autobiography, express their gratitude,  recollection of thier UP days and beyond.  This endeavor produced the landmark, limited edition, soon-to-be collectors' item.  After deducting the costs of publication, it netted $50,000 which was presented at the June 2008 Centennial Celebration.  $30,000 created the Centennial Memoirs Scholarship Fund and the $20,000 created the Centennial Memoirs Carillon Support Fund for its continuous maintenance and that of the intended park.  Both are endowment funds now managed by UP Foundation.
Interesting and delightful outcome of the Memoirs book is a new project to produce the Memoirs sequel, now an all-inclusive Memories...a Legacy Gift of Filipinos and Friends, abroad and in the Philippines commemorating the New Charter just signed with the goal of $100,000 scholarship fund for eligible students in all campuses of the UP.  The book will be dedicated to the 19 and First Woman President, Dr. Emerlinda R. Roman.
