GIFT THAT CONTINUES TO GIVE

Dear Friends abroad and in the Philippines:

All of us have memories, they are among our treasures.  We dream of having them written treasures we can keep, share with others, our relations, and friends, and bequeath them to our heirs.  I therefore invite you to pen your memoir now, your autobiography, a memoir of a turning moment in your life, recollection of your college days, express love and gratitude to special people, create a poem,  share an important message or lesson learned in writing. With your donations, they will be published in a distinguished hard cover, glossy paged, art designed book for our children to keep and treasure.  Welcoming the new challenges for Philippine education in the 21st Century and with the New Charter, the premier university of the Philippines needs our help through our "written treasures" bound as a coffee table book which will be produced by nominal donation of benevolent benefactors like you.  The book will be dedicated to Dr. Emerlinda R. Roman (right) who made the new charter possible after years of trying by previous presidents, a legacy she will leave to the university as 19th and First Woman UP President.
Memoirs of UP Alumni Abroad (described in  earlier blog) netted a donation to UP of a total of $50,000.  For this all-inclusive project to produce Memories...a Legacy Gift which welcomes all who wish to donate, the goal is $100,000 , also an endowment fund which will award only interest earned by the fund...a GIFT THAT CONTINUES TO GIVE, now and in generations to come, to our children's children and beyond.
May I count on you to reserve  early?  Space is limited, it will be first come, first served and a book will be no more than 400 pages.  Are we going to have several volumes?  It's expensive to produce even one. Hesitant to write after all these year?  Let me help you.  Still unwilling to write?  Your tax-deductible is welcome, there will be a donors list in the book. Send your reservation form now and you have till August to submit your pre-approved manuscript. Let's not put off till tomorrow what we can do today... tomorrow may never come.   And remember, it's in giving that we receive...the more we give, the more we receive.

Just call/email me...Menchee

" MEMOIRS" GIVES BIRTH TO "MEMORIES"

New York City. Feb 2 2008.  Dr. Carmencita C. Quesada Fulgado, "Menchee" to her friends, has always had an eye in fundraising for endowed scholarships.  Personally,  on her 25th wedding anniversary, she suggested to her guests, in lieu of a gift, to make a tax-deductible contribution to St. John's University where she was working.  This created the Quesada-Fulgado Anniversary Scholarship for students of Philippine heritage.  During her presidency in the National UPAAA (UP Alumni Association in America) 1995-1999 she raised it's first Scholarship Fund ($10,000), signed the deed of donation in 2000.  In 2006, as prelude to the Centennial, the UPAAA Scholarship II ($20,000) was signed in New York atthe reception held for Chancellor Cao in April, and the UPAA-NY Adopt-a-Scholar Scholarship ($10,000) at the reception held for President Roman in June.  Both were earmarked as part of the Centennial Celebration initiatives of both alumni chapters.
It is not surprising that when Dr. Fulgado was appointed UP Centennial Commissioner Abroad, she took at heart her advisory role and invited fellow alumni abroad in making contributions toward the publication of Memoirs of UP Alumni Abroad.  With their contribution, donors were given a page or more to write their autobiography, express their gratitude,  recollection of thier UP days and beyond.  This endeavor produced the landmark, limited edition, soon-to-be collectors' item.  After deducting the costs of publication, it netted $50,000 which was presented at the June 2008 Centennial Celebration.  $30,000 created the Centennial Memoirs Scholarship Fund and the $20,000 created the Centennial Memoirs Carillon Support Fund for its continuous maintenance and that of the intended park.  Both are endowment funds now managed by UP Foundation.
Interesting and delightful outcome of the Memoirs book is a new project to produce the Memoirs sequel, now an all-inclusive Memories...a Legacy Gift of Filipinos and Friends, abroad and in the Philippines commemorating the New Charter just signed with the goal of $100,000 scholarship fund for eligible students in all campuses of the UP.  The book will be dedicated to the 19 and First Woman President, Dr. Emerlinda R. Roman.

AN INVITATION to CONTRIBUTE AND WRITE YOUR MEMOIR

Filipinos' value for EDUCATION is undeniable.  It is not surprising that our people has the highest regard for the premier institution of higher learning in the country. the University of the Philippines.  On the fourth month of the Centennial Year, a New Charter was signed by the President of the Philippines Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo with the 19th and First Woman UP President, Emerlinda R. Roman, the UP Community and the sponsors of the bill in attendance. The aim of the charter is to help UP become a better and stronger national university for the people.  UP can only be good as its faculty, its students and its programs.  If it is to fulfill its mission, it needs to be always at the cutting edge of things.  The reforms embodied in the New Charter will allow UP to keep in step with the times.
In honor of the New Charter and dedicated to the UP President who made it possible after 25 years of trying by previous presidents, and in commemoration of the new century UP has embarked, this book MEMORIES will be the legacy of this generation in the 21st century.
Individually, there are varied reasons for accepting this invitation to contribute and write:
*  Pen your memoir now, your story for your progeny, and be published for a minimal cost
*  This is an opportunity to meet new friends and get acquainted with "lost" ones
*  Share your "pearls of wisdom" and lessons learned in life, express your humble gratitude
*  Our writings will outlive us, a chance of a  "lifetime of giving" through an endowment fund people will benefit from, now and in generations to come.
"Having" and "giving" are two different things.  In "having" we acquire possessions, properties, goods, experiences that we now have.  This invitation to write is "giving", we share what we have, be it experience, ideas, lessons, talent in prose and poetry.  We are lucky to have acquired, talent and treasures, so much have we received.  Take time now, our chance to express gratitude by giving.  All these for a tax-deductible contribution for an even greater cause...EDUCATION  of our people.
Space is limited, reserve now.  Email: memoriesbyfulgadophd@gmail.com

Memoirs Editor Guest at UP Visayas

During her appointment as Centennial Commissioner, Dr. Menchee Fulgado visited UP Visayas, the "adopted" school of  UPAA-NY where the two Balikbayan Boxes full of books and personal and school items were just received.  At a luncheon meeting of alumni held in her honor, she explained what she was spearheading as a contribution of UP alumni abroad would be for the Centennial Celebration.  This is where she first had the idea that should there be a sequel of the Centennial Memoirs book, it will be all inclusive, and not just for those abroad. She could not really invite them to write.  But now, with MEMORIES...a Legacy Gift of Filipinos at Home and Abroad, UP Visayas and all campuses of UP will have a chance to participate.  In addition, non-UP friends are invited to contribute.

Memoirs of UP Alumni Abroad

MEMORIES...is the sequel of Memoirs of UP Alumni Abroad, a UP Centennial publication which donated $50,000 to the University of the Philippines in June 2008. Editor and Publisher, Dr. Menchee Quesada Fulgado, was appointed Commissioner Abroad for the Centennial Celebration.  While this was to serve as adviser in fundraising, she took it to heart and offered to rally UP alumni abroad to join her in producing a book to commemorate UP's 100th year, by contributing to the book, which will create a Centennial Scholarship Endowment Fund and a Carillon Support Endowment Fund. The project made all these possible, and in June 2008 she, along with some of the 270 contributors brought their donation and were feted by the UP President, Chancellors and the UP Alumni Association.
